| At the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennslyvania, Tiger Woods stated that a 10 handicapper could not break 100 on this course. According to the website http://www.howtobreak80.com/, less than 50% will break 100, 33% will break 90 and 5% will break 80. Mr. Woods has a point, that most people will not break 100 on a golf course set up for a professional event for certain factors; stimpmeter (how fast the greens are), depth of rough, pressure to perform, length of course, etc. A typical PGA hole is about 460-500 yards for a Par 4. Sometimes Par 5 holes can get to an excess of 600 yards! So that means on a Par 4, average Joe Golfer would still be short of the green on a par 4. Here's how; The average 'Joe Golfer' will hit a golf ball with their driver between 220-240 yards on a good shot, then hit a 3 wood about 200 yards. That means that on a 460 yard hole, the best Joe can do is hit the golf ball 440 yards. Unless he has an outstanding short game that makes up for his length, then he is guarenteed to have at least a bogey on each hole. Thats if he is has his maximum performance on each hole every time. Golf Digest Magazine decides to take up Mr. Woods on this offer and asks the average Joe Golfer to participate. You can send in photos and video, but they want 100 words at least from you. The winner will get to play the 7,600 yard Torrey Pines South Course in San Diego, California, the Friday before the 2008 U.S. Open in the conditions the pros will play the following week. The camera along with 3 other celebrities, will also be trying to break 100. This will be broadcasted on NBC on the Sunday of the U.S. Open. There were over 56,000 entries and I happened to be one of them... "Tiger Woods is arguably the best player in the history of Golf, but even the best can be wrong on certain counts; he is only human. I feel I can prove Mr.Woods wrong by breaking 100 on a course slated to be the best in the world in 2008. Life is a round of golf where we get ahead one shot at a time. I have to prove to myself, others, and to Mr.Woods, that the Average Joe Golfer can break 100 on a golf course prepared for the U.S. Open, another shot as I reach my destination." Can I do it? Well, I don't care what you think. I know I can. |
